The film adopts a fly‑on‑the‑wall perspective to portray a single, ordinary day for a prisoner confined in Stalin’s Gulag. It is a faithful adaptation of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s classic novel, which draws directly from his own camp experiences, and was shot entirely on location in the stark, northern landscape of Norway to convey the harsh reality of the labor camps.
