In the land of Dagonaut, a young squire Tiuri and four other hopefuls spend their last night in the chapel before knighthood, a tense, silent vigil where they are tested by rules that forbid conversation, sleep, or meals. The mood is a mix of reverence and pressure, as each boy faces a personal trial that could determine whether they are worthy of chivalry. But the night is upended when a badly wounded knight arrives, pleading for help and delivering a mission that will define Tiuri’s fate.

The dying knight entrusts Tiuri with a crucial job: deliver a secret letter to the king of Unauwen. To prove his mission, Edwinem, a knight whose life slips away, gives Tiuri a special ring—an emblem of legitimacy and a beacon of trust. Against the stern code that governs his world, Tiuri makes a fateful choice and crosses the threshold from apprentice to messenger, accepting the ring and the perilous charge that lies ahead.

Tiuri’s journey unfolds across a realm ruled by Grey Knights and menacing bandits. At Mistrinaut Castle, Tiuri’s progress is halted by suspicion and fear. The Grey Knights accuse him of murder—even though the real culprits are the Red Riders who move unseen in the shadows. It is Lavinia, a brave maiden, who speaks up for Tiuri and convinces her father, the castle’s lord, to believe in his innocence. Her faith changes the trajectory of Tiuri’s quest, and the lord strengthens his resolve by providing Tiuri with Grey Knight support for the journey that lies ahead.

On the road, Tiuri encounters a pilgrim whose outward generosity masks a more dangerous allegiance: a Red Rider spy. When this rider’s life is threatened, Tiuri’s courage leads him to intervene, and the spy’s perspective shifts in a surprising way, hinting at the ambiguous loyalties that color every encounter along the way.

A hermit named Menaures becomes Tiuri’s mentor in the wilds and sends his boy Piak to guide the young squire. With Piak’s help, Tiuri moves from one peril to the next, protecting the letter and learning to read its meaning even when the words are written in an unfamiliar tongue. Piak becomes more than a guide—he helps Tiuri translate the message into song so they can remember it, turning language into music as they journey forward.

The pair must cross the Rainbow River, a dramatic crossing that requires more than luck. They face a toll they cannot pay and seek an alternate route, only for danger to tighten its grip. Piak slips into the river by accident, and Tiuri’s quick rescue saves his companion from drowning. When guards finally intercept them, the ring again serves as a proof of their mission, allowing Tiuri to justify his purpose and continue toward the final leg of his voyage.

Ultimately, Tiuri fulfils the prophecy of his mission by delivering the letter to King of Unauwen. The message within reveals a looming danger: the rival kingdom Eviellan has a plot to threaten their land. For his bravery, perseverance, and careful handling of a dangerous secret, Tiuri is honored by the king, recognizing that a single act of courage can alter the course of an entire realm. The journey, tests, and choices Tiuri faces illuminate the path from squire to knight, underscored by the courage to protect a message that could save a nation.
