Sugi Toranosuke, a former ronin, returns to Edo after surviving a childhood suicide attempt. Rescued and raised by a master swordsman, he becomes a skilled and compassionate warrior. Set in 1868 as the Meiji Restoration dismantles the samurai class, Sugi is bewildered by the turmoil, while his mentor urges him to avoid the chaotic power struggles among rival clans.
