How The Knife (2025) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.

The film closes on the aftermath of the night when an unknown woman breaks into Chris and Alex’s home. Chris, disoriented after drinking beer and a mix of pills, manages to subdue the intruder but can’t remember the exact details, and Alex, terrified that their story will look suspicious, takes a knife lying on the floor and places it in the woman’s hand to make it seem like she was armed.

When the police arrive, the case is led by Detective Carlsen, an older white officer who quickly senses inconsistencies. She interrogates each family member in turn, subtly twisting the environment to isolate them: she pretends the mother is present while questioning the son, separates the crying infant from its mother, and even ignores a child’s asthma attack to keep the pressure on. Through these tactics she extracts a confession that the family had “tampered” with the scene, despite the fact that the intruder is still alive and merely an addict who stumbled into their house.

Carlsen pieces together the timeline—Chris’s intoxication, Alex’s desperate placement of the knife, and the fact that the “victim” was unarmed—and uses it to build a narrative that paints the couple as liars and criminals. The final twist is that Chris is arrested for “tampering with a crime scene” and for possession of controlled substances, a charge amplified by the detectives’ bias. As he is led away, the police radio chatter reduces his actions to drug dealing and assault, ignoring the context of the intrusion and the systemic prejudice that makes a Black family’s truth so easy to dismiss.

The ending leaves the audience with the stark reminder of the opening monologue: every action has consequences, and in a world that claims to be “civilized,” those consequences fall most heavily on those who are already marginalized.
