After their magical New Year’s night, Zhenya and Nadya go separate ways—Nadya marries a bureaucrat and has a daughter also named Nadya, while Zhenya marries, has a son Konstantin, and both later divorce. Decades on, Konstantin, drunk, ends up in the younger Nadya’s flat as part of a convoluted ruse by Zhenya’s friends to bring him back to St. Petersburg and rekindle his old romance, while their children begin a new relationship.
