The story of vaudeville performer Eva Tanguay, Mitzi Gaynor, is told to two writers who plan to turn it into a script for Hollywood producer George Jessel.

Her former partner Eddie McCoy, David Wayne, recalls how they met. Recently widowed, he found Eva singing in a cafe and, after she was fired, offered her a job that would launch her climb from a waitress to a stage sensation. Eva quickly falls for singer Larry Woods, Bob Graham, though the poised piano player Charles Bennett, Oscar Levant, also has eyes for her. Eva feels flattered and envious in equal measure, and when she discovers that Larry is married, she decides to strike out on her own.

Bennett is tracked down by the writers and claims Eddie’s story isn’t true. Eva, meanwhile, remembers that she and Eddie first met while she was already singing in a cafe. Unable to get Eddie to sober up and rejoin their act, she makes a bold break and is discovered by Florenz Ziegfeld, Wilton Graff, who signs Eva to his legendary Follies.

As Eva rises, she learns that Larry’s marriage is strained, but hopes for a lead role in his new operetta, which seems set to go to Stella, Hazel Brooks, another talented performer. In a moment of spite, Eva hires someone to launch a tomato-tossing stunt at Larry on stage, not knowing that he will appear in uniform—the Army—since he has enlisted to fight in the war. The prank backfires in a painful moment for Eva, who wrestles with regret and loneliness for a while, but the course of love eventually bends back toward reconciliation when Larry reappears and wins her back.

Q1

Why did Eddie McCoy claim to have discovered Eva Tanguay when he didn't?

A.

Eddie McCoy told the writers that he discovered Eva while she was working as a waitress in a cafe and offered her a job after she was fired. However, Charles Bennett later reveals to the writers that Eddie's story isn't true, Eva was already singing in the cafe when they met, not working there as a waitress. The film presents conflicting accounts of Eva's discovery, with Bennett asserting the true story is different from what Eddie recollects.

Early in the film, Bennett's affection for Eva and his presence as a piano player hint that he had a closer view of her early career than Eddie admits.

Why did Eva Tanguay leave Eddie McCoy's act?

A.

After discovering that Larry Woods was married, Eva felt wounded by the romantic situation and decided to strike out on her own. Unable to get Eddie to sober up and rejoin their act, she made a bold break from the partnership. This decision marked her transition from Eddie's act to pursuing a solo career that would eventually lead her to Ziegfeld's Follies.

Eva's conflicted feelings about Larry and Bennett were established early, showing she valued independence in both love and career.

How did Eva Tanguay get discovered by Florenz Ziegfeld?

A.

After breaking away from Eddie McCoy's act, Eva continued performing in cafes where she caught the attention of Florenz Ziegfeld. Q4

Why did the tomato-throwing stunt backfire on Eva Tanguay?

A.

In a moment of spite, Eva hired someone to throw tomatoes at Larry Woods during a performance because she was upset that he might give the lead role in his new operetta to Stella instead of her. Unbeknownst to Eva, Larry had enlisted to fight in the war and appeared onstage in an Army uniform. The prank turned painfully embarrassing when she realized he had joined the military, making her prank seem cruel and misguided.

A.

Larry Woods had enlisted to fight in the war and appeared in his Army uniform during the performance where Eva's tomato stunt took place. The timing of the prank coincided with the war era, and earlier mentions of Larry's career struggles hinted at larger events affecting his life.

Q6

Why did Charles Bennett dispute Eddie McCoy's version of discovering Eva?

A.

Charles Bennett was the piano player who also had romantic feelings for Eva. When the writers tracked him down, he claimed Eddie's story about discovering Eva wasn't true. Bennett had been present during Eva's early career and had a different perspective on how she entered the business. His dispute adds ambiguity to the film's depiction of Eva's origins and highlights the conflicting memories among those who knew her.

Bennett's affection for Eva throughout the film gave him both the motive and the knowledge to challenge Eddie's account.
