In the desolate Manchurian desert in 1939, months before the Second World War begins, the formidable Park Chang-yi, Lee Byung-hun a feared bandit and hitman, is hired to seize a treasure map from a Japanese official traveling by train. Before he can secure it, Yoon Tae-goo, Song Kang-ho the notorious thief known as the Weird, steals the map and is drawn into the Bad’s violent hijacking of the train. The brutal assault leaves Japanese and Manchurian guards, and civilians, dead. Park Do-won, Jung Woo-sung—the Good and a hawk-eyed bounty hunter—arrives to claim the bounty on Chang-yi. Meanwhile, Tae-goo escapes, eluding both his Good and Bad pursuers. A fourth force—a coalition of Manchurian bandits—also seeks the map to hawk it at the Ghost Market. Tae-goo clings to the belief that the map hides gold and Qing dynasty secrets, long buried before the dynasty’s collapse.

As the chase tightens, bounties rise and the Imperial Japanese Army races to reclaim the map, convinced it can > save the Japanese Empire . A relentless sequence of shootouts and chases leads to a climactic showdown where the Japanese army, Manchurian bandits, Do-won, Chang-yi and his gang pursue Tae-goo from all sides. Do-won cuts through soldiers and triggers an explosion that scatters the pursuers; Chang-yi’s gang fights to hold the line, but is whittled down. Only three reach the supposed treasure: Chang-yi, Tae-goo, and Do-won. They find nothing but a boarded-over hole in the desert. Chang-yi recognizes Tae-goo as the* Finger Chopper*—the same man who cut off his finger in a knife fight—and Do-won realizes he has mistaken his rival for Chang-yi. The trio exchange a tense, fatal volley in a long Mexican standoff, and all fall into the sand, dying and alone. The hole erupts with a geyser of crude oil, a cruel twist of fate that seems almost absurd in its futility.

Do-won survives, along with Tae-goo, and with a fresh bounty on Tae-goo’s head, the chase resumes across the Manchurian desert, leaving behind heat, dust, and a legend that will outlive them all.
