In a dystopian future, humanity faces a dire threat from a parasitic fungus that spreads through bodily fluids. This infection has turned most of its victims into feral creatures known as 'hungries', creating a landscape of chaos and fear.

A unique group of children, who are carriers of the fungus yet appear normal, are held captive on an army base. They are closely monitored by soldiers and subjected to experiments designed by Dr. Caroline Caldwell.

Helen Justineau, the children's teacher, develops a strong bond with Melanie, a standout girl among the group. This connection raises the stakes when Melanie's life comes under threat due to the experiments planned for her.

When the facility is overrun by hungries, Melanie manages to escape from her impending dissection. She joins Justineau, Caldwell, and two surviving soldiers, Gallagher and Dillon, in a desperate bid for survival.

While trying to flee in a truck, the group faces a brutal ambush from hungry creatures, leading to the death of Dillon. The attack heightens their peril, forcing them to abandon the vehicle and continue on foot.

The remaining group makes their way to London, using a special 'blocker' gel to mask their scent from the dormant hungries. This strategic move helps them navigate through dangerous territory.

They find temporary shelter in an empty hospital for the night. During their stay, Caldwell reveals a haunting truth about 'neonates', second-generation hungries born through gruesome means, complicating the group's understanding of the infection.

As dawn breaks, the group discovers they are surrounded by hungries; however, Melanie's unique traits allow her to move freely and explore. She scavenges for food, even resorting to consuming a stray cat, showcasing her resourcefulness.

Venturing further into London, the group finds alarming signs of the infection's devastation, including heaps of infected bodies and fungal growths. Caldwell warns that these fungal formations could produce spores that threaten humanity's survival.

Facing critical shortages of supplies, a wounded Caldwell determines that sacrificing Melanie for her research is the key to saving humankind. Gallagher's tragic death during a supply run exacerbates the group's sense of urgency and danger.

When Parks and Justineau find themselves trapped by a group of feral hungry children, Melanie steps up to confront their leader. Her bravery leads to their escape, proving her strength in an increasingly hostile world.

Back at the lab, Caldwell reveals her sinister intentions to dissect Melanie, but it becomes clear that Melanie is more than just an experiment; she represents hope for humanity's evolution. Melanie's escape sparks chaos.

After igniting the towering fungal structure and creating a cloud of spores, Melanie escapes Caldwell's grasp. Parks, infected by spores, pleads with her to end his life before he transforms, leading to a heartbreaking choice for her.

The film concludes with Justineau trapped in the lab, mourning the loss of her friends while Melanie takes charge outside, leading the hybrid children and the feral ones in a fragile truce. This moment signifies a new beginning amidst despair.
