Before long, a second worker’s corpse is discovered at the opposite end of the camp, underscoring the scale of the danger. Heeding Samuel’s advice, Patterson arranges thorn fences around the tents to deter the felines, hoping to give the workers a fighting chance. But danger escalates; a lion strikes in broad daylight, snatching another laborer from the open camp, a stark reminder that these predators are not easily repelled. In a fierce confrontation, one lion lunges from a building roof, slicing Starling’s throat and wounding Patterson in the process.
