In the early 1960s, nearly two decades after World War II, an Italian general and an army colonel who serves as a priest travel to Albania on a mission to locate and recover the skeletal remains of Italian soldiers killed in the conflict, so they can be returned for proper burial in Italy. While venturing deeper into the Albanian countryside, they discover they are being shadowed by another general, intent on finding the bodies of German soldiers who fell in the same war.
