The Frozen Ghost

On the opening night of Gregor the Great's act, he hypnotizes his fiancée on stage while a radio audience tunes in. A skeptical audience member named Hohl loudly accuses him of fakery. The drunken man Alex hypnotizes dies, though the medical examiner later attributes the death to a heart attack. Overcome with guilt, Alex confesses to murder and breaks off his engagement with Maura.

Ashamed by his actions, Alex confesses to the murder, even though the death was ruled a heart attack by the medical examiner. He breaks off the engagement to Maura and withdraws from their life together. The emotional fallout pushes him toward a new job opportunity arranged by his manager.

George Keene arranges for Alex to work for Valerie Monet, owner of a wax museum, as a lecturer. Alex joins Valerie and her niece Nina, who are excited to have him aboard. The presence of the jealous former plastic surgeon Rudi Poldan introduces a hint of trouble to come.

Maura reappears and tries to win Gregor back. Valerie becomes suspicious and, influenced by jealousy, accuses Alex of making advances to Nina. An argument ends with Valerie fainting, and Gregor leaves in anger.

After a night’s sleep, Alex returns to Valerie's residence to find she has vanished. Inspector Brant suspects that Alex is involved, believing he was the last person to see Valerie alive. The disappearance triggers a police investigation that pulls in everyone connected to the museum.

Rudi discovers Valerie in a coma and hides her among his unfinished wax sculptures. The revelation fuels Nina's suspicions about Alex and the others, and the web of suspicion begins to tighten around Gregor's circle.

Rudi's actions are part of a larger scheme to have Alex declared mentally ill in order to gain control of his property, with George secretly pulling the strings. The plan's mastermind is revealed to be George, not Alex, though the truth remains hidden from most of the cast. Nina remains wary but unaware of the full plot.

Rudi goes further and causes Nina to fall into a coma, hiding her body in the same way as Valerie. The conspirators press on, hoping their scheme will eliminate Alex's support network and secure control over his assets. Nina's fate deepens the mystery as Brant closes in.

Rudi shows George the locations of the two bodies; they discover Valerie is dead. George panics and schemes to dispose of both bodies, while Nina remains alive, adding a ticking clock to the lie.

Alex trusts Maura and has her placed in a trance that implicates both George and Rudi. The trance scene demonstrates Maura's special abilities and provides crucial evidence to expose the conspiracy. The plan shifts from hidden graves to a public confrontation.

Inspector Brant captures George after hearing Maura's revelation. Alex and Maura go to the museum cellar to free Nina and confront Rudi. In the struggle, Rudi is pushed into the furnace and dies.

Alex and Maura marry and begin their honeymoon, with Nina as their ward. Brant asks for Alex's help on a new case, cementing his status as a trusted medical consultant. The film closes with Gregor's signature quip that it's all done with mirrors.
