Tamara “Tammy” Faye LaValley finds herself captivated by Jim Bakker while pursuing her studies at North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Despite her mother’s, Rachel, disapproval, the couple marries and makes the bold decision to drop out of college in order to preach and uplift Christian communities across the United States. Their dynamic preaching style catches the eye of Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network, who enlists them as hosts for the children’s program, Jim and Tammy. Jim eventually takes the helm of CBN’s The 700 Club (1966), while Tammy gives birth to their beloved daughter, Tammy Sue.

Their journey brings them into contact with conservative pastor Jerry Falwell at a social gathering, where he shows keen interest in collaborating with CBN. However, after a heated exchange regarding the intersection of faith and politics, Tammy encourages Jim to establish their own television network, allowing them to have autonomy over their programming. With this ambition, they part ways with CBN and launch the PTL Satellite Network, featuring their flagship show, The PTL Club (1974), which quickly garners a significant following.

Tammy invites her mother, Rachel, and her stepfather, Fred Grover, to reside with them at their luxurious Tega Cay, South Carolina estate. However, Rachel’s concerns about PTL’s financial practices begin to surface. As media scrutiny intensifies over PTL’s financial management, Tammy’s flirtation with music producer Gary S. Paxton leads to tension when Jim dismisses him from the team after the birth of their son, Jay. In the 1980s, Jim turns his focus toward establishing a Christian theme park, while Tammy battles addiction to pills and grapples with Falwell’s exerting influence over their programming. In a bold move, she invites AIDS patient and pastor Steve Pieters for an interview to discuss support for the LGBTQ+ community, upsetting Falwell in the process.

Amid a collapsing relationship, Tammy faces a health crisis during a taping, sparking a fierce argument with Jim. The situation escalates as Falwell seizes control of PTL in light of emerging scandals regarding PTL’s financial woes and Jim’s infidelities, including rumors of sexual encounters with men. Consequently, Jim is eventually incarcerated for fraud.

By 1992, the couple’s marriage has disintegrated, with Tammy and Jim officially divorced. Rachel has passed away, leaving Tammy struggling to reignite her career and land television appearances. She reluctantly accepts an invitation to be a special guest at a Christian concert at Oral Roberts University, where she takes to the stage to deliver an emotional performance of Battle Hymn of the Republic, envisioning a vibrant gospel choir accompanying her.

In a reflective epilogue, it notes that Falwell died in 2007, while Jim made a return to televangelism with a revived PTL following his release from prison. Meanwhile, Tammy became actively involved in supporting LGBTQ+ communities until her own passing in 2007.
