Still thinking about how The Electric State (2025) ended? Here’s a full breakdown of the ending, key final moments, major twists, and the deeper meaning behind the film’s conclusion.
At the climax of The Electric State, Michelle makes the difficult decision to end her brother Christopher’s life in order to dismantle the oppressive system of Skate and his Sentre droids. Throughout the film, we learn that Christopher was a prodigious young inventor who was kidnapped after a car accident that killed their parents, and his mind was fused with the Sentre network, turning him into its core processor. This transformation kept him alive but also made him a prisoner of Skate’s virtual utopia. Michelle, accompanied by her robot friends, infiltrates the Sentre headquarters to rescue Christopher from the cocoon-like state he’s trapped in. When they reach him, Michelle, who had previously avoided using the Neurocaster due to ethical concerns, reluctantly puts it on to access his mind. Inside, she finds that Christopher’s consciousness is in a symbiotic relationship with Sentre—if they are separated, both would cease to exist. Christopher explains that he could be sustained for over a century in that state, but living like that isn’t truly living, and he pleads with Michelle to end his life. Despite her emotional anguish, Michelle hesitates, torn between her brother’s plea and the ongoing fight to stop Skate. PC reminds her of the destruction caused by the drones and their allies, which convinces Michelle that they must act quickly. Just as Skate arrives to try to stop her, Peanut intervenes, giving Michelle the opportunity for one last embrace with Christopher. In that moment, Michelle pulls the plug, ending Christopher’s life and causing all the Neurocasters and the network to power down. With Christopher gone, the immediate threat is neutralized, and the surviving characters are able to celebrate their victory. However, in the aftermath, the film hints that Christopher might still be alive in some form. As news spreads about Skate’s downfall and the shutdown of the system, we see Cosmo, the robot with a partial connection to Christopher, returned to life after being thrown into a junkyard, suggesting that Christopher managed to leak a part of his consciousness into the robot. The ending leaves open the possibility that although he was sacrificed, Christopher’s consciousness might still exist somewhere, hinting at the potential for his return and a continuation of his story. Ultimately, the movie explores themes of sacrifice, the importance of living in reality, and the lingering hope that life and consciousness can survive beyond even the most dire circumstances.
