This shift in how people move becomes the quiet backdrop for a broader, escalating crisis that plays out across land, air, and the weather.

On 19 December, a crossover accident on the M25 motorway blocks traffic in both directions and cuts off access to the M23. A diversion route is opened, but poor coordination between the Highways Agency and Surrey Police soon causes gridlock as roadworks clog the newly chosen path. A chemical tanker jackknifes near Heathrow Airport, crippling the southern half of the M25 and amplifying the sense that the country’s transportation arteries are buckling at the seams. The disaster’s first fatal consequence arrives when an ambulance carrying a patient injured in the earlier crash runs out of essential medicine, underscoring how quickly logistical failures can translate into human tragedy.

Across the skies, airspace above Britain strains under capacity, forcing air traffic controllers to extend shifts and press on with a frenetic schedule. Tim Pigott-Smith provides the narration, framing a crisis that touches every corner of the network. One pilot, Jerry Newell of British Airways, finds himself caught in the gridlock and resolves to walk to Heathrow as he prepares for a flight to Toulouse. Back in Heathrow’s control tower, control-room staff confront an impossible workload. Nicola Evans, working late after offering to cover for a late colleague, makes a fateful misstep: she directs an Aer Lingus flight toward a runway that is about to be used by a Czech Airlines cargo plane. With conflicting instructions echoing through the room, she hesitates and ultimately issues a go-around to the cargo flight. The decision saves the Aer Lingus aircraft, but the two planes collide on the runway, killing everyone on both planes. The burning wreckage soon blankets Hounslow with fires that spread across the town. Heathrow shuts down, and other UK airspace follows suit in short order.

The immediate aftermath centers on the families left behind. Jane, Jerry Newell’s wife, reaches home in Shepperton and sees news of the air disaster on television. She learns that Jerry’s flight had been canceled and that he had been reassigned to the doomed leg to Toulouse, a revelation that confirms his death. Julian’s family, who had managed to reach the airport in time, also perish in the crash. Yet the case dissolves when findings point to systemic failures within Britain’s air traffic control system rather than the actions of any single operator.
