The Crazy Stranger

Stéphane, a young man from Paris, travels to Romania in search of the singer Nora Luca, a figure his father spoke about. He follows a lead along a frozen road, aware that this journey will test his resolve. The journey sets the tone for a road that will reveal a hidden Roma world.

On the road, Stéphane encounters Izidor, a Rom who tries to tell him about Nora Luca. Izidor, often inebriated, drags him toward his village and begins to impart a fragment of Romani. This encounter marks the beginning of Stéphane's immersion into Roma life.

Izidor welcomes him into his home, calling him 'his Frenchman' and taking pride in the unusual guest. He begins teaching Stéphane the Romani language, a key step to understanding the culture. Stéphane learns that Adriani, Izidor's son, has been arrested, adding gravity to his stay.

The Roma initially dislike him, insulting him in their language and trying to trick him. Through patience and respect for their music and customs, Stéphane earns their trust and a place among them. He gains intimate access to Roma life, witnessing both a raucous wedding and a bittersweet funeral.

Sabina, a young divorced Romani dancer who can speak French, is hostile at first but gradually warms to him. The pair bond through journeys across the countryside as they record traditional Romani music. Their partnership deepens the film's sense of travel and shared artistry.

As they travel, Stéphane and Sabina grow closer, their personal bond mirroring the music they seek to preserve. They venture across rural Romania to capture songs, learning more about each other's histories. The musical recordings become a catalyst for emotional intimacy.

Just as Stéphane and Sabina begin to make love for the first time, Adriani returns after many months in jail. The welcome of the village turns uneasy with his sudden return. The lovers abruptly switch from privacy to tension as the social situation tightens.

Adriani murders a man in the local bar, or so he claims; the accusation fuels a volatile mood. He escapes, but a mob pursues him and torches the village, killing him in the blaze. The tragedy marks the destruction of the community Stéphane has come to know.

Stéphane and Sabina return to find the village in ashes and the Roma community shattered. Izidor mourns the loss of his son and pleads for some mercy from the earth. The scale of the tragedy drives them toward a painful, shared grief.

Stéphane leaves the village and drives to the mile marker where the film opened, overwhelmed by loss. He chooses to bury the tapes he recorded with Sabina, creating a ritual funeral for the memories.

He pours vodka on the 'grave' of the tapes and places the bottle as a symbolic grave, then dances in a gesture echoing Izidor at his brother's funeral. The act is a cathartic release, tying memory to ritual. The moment underscores the cost of travel and longing.

A final shot reveals Sabina sleeping in the back seat of the car. She wakes, smiles at Stéphane's solemn ritual, and accepts the unresolved future ahead. The screen fades to black on a quiet note.
