The timeline jumps five years ahead, revealing Sali's grim transformation from a vibrant forger to a prisoner in a concentration camp. He is transferred from Mauthausen to Sachsenhausen, facing the dire realities of camp life.

Upon arriving at Sachsenhausen, Sali is confronted by Sturmbannfuhrer Herzog, the same inspector who executed his arrest five years prior. Herzog reveals a plan for Sali and his fellow inmates to utilize their forgery skills for a dangerous project.

The inmates learn they have been selected for Project Bernhard, aimed at destabilizing the British and American economies through forged currency. The tension between the captors and the prisoners starts to build as they envision their new roles.

Despite receiving amenities that reflect a slightly better living condition, the environment remains fraught with tension. Herzog's unpredictable behavior swings between being amicable and tyrannical, showcasing the terrifying dynamics within the camp.

As the forced labor on pound forgeries progresses, Herzog is delighted when the forgeries pass inspections by Swiss and British banks. This validation of Sali's work intensifies their involvement in the morally ambiguous project.

With the war coming to a close, tension escalates among the forgers. They grapple with moral dilemmas about their role in prolonging the conflict while their fellow prisoners suffer, leading to explosive arguments among team members.
