The Colossus of New York

Jeremy Spensser, Ross Martin, is a brilliant young member of a New York family of scientists and humanitarians. He is killed when struck by a truck while chasing his son’s toy airplane, on the eve of winning the International Peace Prize. He leaves behind his wife Anne Spensser, Mala Powers, and their young son Billy Spensser, Charles Herbert.

His father, Dr. William Spensser, [Otto Kruger], a renowned brain surgeon, is tormented by the thought that his son’s gifts could still illuminate the world if given another chance. He devises a bold plan: transplant Jeremy’s revived mind into an artificial, robotic body so the brilliance can continue to benefit humanity. He convinces Jeremy’s brother, Henry Spensser, Dr. Henry Spensser, John Baragrey, an expert in automation, to help carry out the work in secret.

Kept in seclusion for nearly a year, the monstrous machine they have created—the Colossus, brought to life by Jeremy’s mind—begins to take shape under their careful concealment. Its fearsome appearance ensures it remains hidden from the public, while it quietly persists in pursuing new food sources and other projects that could feed a starving world. The Colossus itself is a marvel of engineering, a silent giant that seems almost outside the realm of humanity, yet still tethered to Jeremy’s intellect.

As isolation wears on, the human element slips away. Jeremy’s mind, housed inside the sterile shell, begins tolose its warmth and empathy, and the machine’s actions grow increasingly brutal. In a shocking turn, the Colossus kills Henry, Jeremy’s brother who has fallen in love with Anne, rupturing the fragile family bonds that hoped to anchor the mind’s remnants.
