Ryuichi Okagawa, a Japanese writer who reported from China, returns home ill after marrying devout Jin‑hua in Shanghai despite already having a wife in Japan. Betrayed, Jin‑hua is forced into prostitution, contracts a severe flu and a stigma‑ridden disease. Consumed by guilt, Okagawa goes back, but finds her beyond rescue.
