She vanishes after they sleep, but he later spots her aboard the Titanic and obtains a photograph. Returning home, Horty suspects his wife Zoe of an affair with the foundry’s owner, Simeon. He drifts into a bar where, under the influence, he recounts an erotic fantasy about his night with Marie, drawing an ever‑growing crowd each evening.
