The Carpenter

Alice Jarett is released from a mental institution in Québec after suffering a breakdown. Eager to start anew, she relocates with her husband Martin to the countryside of Canada.

Alice and Martin move into a partially completed house that needs significant work. Martin hires a cheap construction crew to finish the renovations, hoping for a fresh start.

One night, Alice is awakened by mysterious hammering noises coming from the basement. She discovers a carpenter who appears to be different from the rest of the crew, showing a pleasant demeanor.

While Martin is away, the carpenter intervenes when another worker attempts to assault Alice. In a shocking turn of events, he severely injures the man with a circular saw before calmly cleaning up the scene.

Alice and the carpenter share several encounters, sparking Alice's belief that he is the spirit of Edward, the house's deceased builder. Despite his violent past, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him.

Alice witnesses Edward kill two former workers who break into the house intending to steal. The chilling event deepens her conflicting feelings about him as she grapples with his dark side.

Laura Bell, one of Martin's students, arrives to reveal her affair with Martin and her pregnancy. This shocking news leads to a heated argument between her and Alice.

In a moment of rage, Alice, with Edward's encouragement, kills Laura using a nail gun. The gruesome discovery leaves Martin in utter shock upon returning home to find his lover's body.

Upon discovering Laura's body, an enraged Martin confronts Alice. Edward intervenes brutally, crushing Martin's head in a vise, solidifying Alice's descent into violence.

Alice's sister Rachel arrives, only to find the horrifying scene left by Martin and Laura's deaths. As she tries to rescue Alice, she is stopped by Edward, who becomes aggressive.

Upset with Edward's violent actions toward her sister, Alice confronts him. Their struggle reveals that damaging the house inflicts pain on Edward, changing the dynamic of their interaction.

In a desperate attempt to escape Edward, Alice uses a blow torch to ignite the house. As the flames rage, she realizes the connection between Edward and the house itself.
