The Burning Plain

The story begins in the mid-1990s in a small town near Las Cruces, New Mexico. We are introduced to Gina, a devoted wife and mother of four, who is living a seemingly normal life while harboring a deep secret that will soon unravel.

Gina begins an illicit affair with Nick Martinez, a local man who is also married with a family. This secret liaison sets into motion a chain of events that intertwines the lives of both families in unforeseen ways.

Their teenage daughter, Mariana, inadvertently discovers her mother's affair with Nick. This revelation triggers a mix of emotions, including betrayal and desperation, prompting her to take drastic actions.

In a bid to end her mother's affair, Mariana disconnects the gas pipe in Nick's trailer and lights it on fire. This impulsive action leads to a tragic inferno, resulting in the deaths of Gina and Nick, forever altering the course of Mariana's life.

Years later, we find Sylvia thriving in Oregon's culinary scene, where she has carved out a successful career. However, the shadows of her past loom heavily over her achievements, leading to feelings of anxiety and isolation.

Unbeknownst to Sylvia, Carlos, Santiago's friend, takes a keen interest in her life. His concern grows as he witnesses Sylvia's struggles, which are largely tied to the emotional aftermath of her past decisions.

A severe accident involving Santiago's crop-dusting plane lands him in the hospital. In a moment of urgency, he asks Carlos to track down Sylvia, who has been missing from their lives since she left with their child.

Faced with the challenge of bridging the gap between Sylvia and her estranged daughter Maria, Carlos introduces them. The encounter is charged with emotional conflict, as Maria struggles with feelings of abandonment.
