Bernard (Gérard Depardieu) is a corrupt doctor who murders his unfaithful wife and her lover, then joins the French Foreign Legion. En route to Africa his plane crashes; a passenger named Rossi shoots him and escapes. Villagers nurse Bernard back to health, rebuilds his fortune in Africa and claims a dead man’s French passport to secure identity.
