1950s Provence, traveling salesman Paul Verdier leaves his wife for his weekly route. On a train he meets Marie, a young pregnant woman without a husband returning to a conservative village. She asks Paul to pose as her spouse to shield her from family scandal. Though hesitant, Paul agrees, charmed, unaware of the complications this charade will bring.
