What Happens in The August Virgin: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The August Virgin (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Eva, Itsaso Arana, a 33-year-old actress who is suddenly without work, chooses to stay in Madrid rather than flee the August heat. She moves into a friend’s central apartment and resolves to learn the city by simply letting events unfold around her. Amid the sweltering days and lively nights, she drifts through the streets, drops into bars, and gathers impressions from a mix of old friends and new faces, both men and women, who cross her path.

Walking home during the small hours, she notices a man on the edge of a bridge, seemingly preparing to jump. She initiates a conversation to divert him from the precipice. The man is Agos, Vito Sanz, an out-of-work actor who is separated from his wife and their young daughter, supporting himself with various odd jobs in bars.

The next evening, Eva follows Agos into a bar and keeps the conversation going, finding herself drawn to his story and presence. She later returns to his flat, and the two share an intimate moment. In the aftermath, Eva reveals that she is pregnant, a revelation that shifts the dynamic between them and the way they view the future.

When Agos’s daughter asks who the father is, Eva admits that she does not know. The little girl’s response lands with a quiet, uneasy honesty: > that's just like the Virgin Mary.

Through these intertwined encounters, the film softly maps a city that can be both a stage for chance meetings and a mirror for personal reckoning—where desire, responsibility, and the randomness of life brush against one another in the heat of a Madrid summer.
