In 1794 Maximilien Robespierre defended “state terror,” claiming political violence was the road to virtue. The film mixes dramatized scenes, archival footage, and interviews to examine his leadership of the Committee of Public Safety during the Revolution’s Year Two. Philosophers Slavoj Žižek and Simon Schama dispute his legacy—Žižek sees terror as justifiable, Schama links it to later totalitarian regimes.
