From April to July 1794, Robespierre joins Saint‑Just and Couthon in a revolutionary triumvirate. He seeks to impose his vision, marrying the principle of virtue with the necessity of terror during the crisis. In May he creates the Cult of the Supreme Being, yet his policies generate many powerful enemies.
