Grieving the loss of his beloved, he encounters an inventor who claims to have built a device that transports people to a parallel world. Using it, he finds his lover alive and decides to stay, but soon discovers that the alternate reality follows different rules. When he tries to return, the machine is destroyed in a fire and its creator is killed. Later he meets a woman from his own world who has built a similar device; officials label her insane because her counterpart is alive elsewhere. He helps her in the hope of restoring a way home.
