The movie begins with adult Ved (Ranbir Kapoor) and Tara (Deepika Padukone) caught in a mesmerizing spectacle that vividly illustrates the dreary routine of a corporate life. A poignant flashback transports us to Shimla, where a young Ved (portrayed by Yash Sehgal) accompanies his father (played by Javed Sheikh) home from school. Captivated by the enchanting tales spun by a street storyteller (enacted by Piyush Mishra), young Ved is fascinated — not just by the stories, but by their whimsical twists and turns.
Fast forward to the present day, we find ourselves in Corsica, where Tara crosses paths with adult Ved. They enter into a playful agreement to keep their true selves hidden, engaging in charming interactions as “Don” and “Mona Darling.” Their financial constraints lead them to put on a dazzling show at an upscale restaurant, just before Tara prepares to fly back to India. Despite their lively friendship, there’s an undercurrent of unexpressed affection, leaving Tara feeling melancholy as she reflects on her romantic entanglement with Ved. This deep longing stirs memories of her childhood, marked by young Ved’s quest for understanding why joy often feels fleeting, questioning the storyteller about the ephemeral nature of happiness.
Upon returning to Kolkata, Tara’s life unfolds against the backdrop of the song “Heer To Badi Sad Hai.” Her father (played by Nikhil Bhagat) entrusts her tea business to her, paving the way for her to innovate with tea boutiques. Now pursuing her ambitions in Delhi, four years slide by until she unexpectedly encounters adult Ved, who is evolving in his career as a product manager. They finally reveal their true identities in hopes of rekindling their connection. In a bid to move past unrequited love, Tara invites him to dinner at a Japanese restaurant, hoping that their conversations will mirror those enchanting days in Corsica. Instead, Ved fixates on work-related chatter.
Following a night spent together at Tara’s home, Ved bounces back to his daily grind — a routine of mundane chores and obligatory responsibilities permeates his mornings and culminates in stiff meetings filled with the same dull topics. On Ved’s birthday, he takes a leap and proposes to Tara, but she is disheartened — he seems so different since returning from Corsica, and the love she hoped for feels inadequate. Dismayed, she refuses his proposal.
Ved shares a rickshaw ride home with a driver (played by Ishteyak Khan) who shares his own tale of dreams thwarted. This prompts a flashback to Shimla, where we witness young Ved’s struggles with mathematics, as he grapples with his father’s expectations of pursuing engineering, abandoning his passion for playing the flute after the family’s migration from Lahore post-Partition.
Returning to present-day Delhi, Ved seeks advice from locals, grappling with his identity and the weight of his choices. The storyline revisits Shimla, recalling moments where Ved had to leave his hometown to forge a career in engineering. However, his efforts often backfire at work, leading to unorthodox meetings that leave his boss utterly frustrated, resulting in his dismissal.
In frustration, Ved confronts Tara, who promises to help him through his struggles, yet he chooses to walk away. The following day, a shift occurs in Ved, and he begins to share whimsical stories at work, inciting both amusement and exasperation from his colleagues until he’s ultimately fired. Driven by a mix of desperation and clarity in his slice of life, he returns to Shimla — his motivation reignited by a desire for self-discovery and unity with the storyteller’s narrative.
A tense quarrel with his father leads to a moment of reflection, and through a conversation with the storyteller, Ved realizes he must confront his fears to complete his narrative. This pushes him to share his life’s journey with his family, prompting his father to finally support his dream. After resolving his inner chaos, Ved sets his sights on Tara once more.
In a twist of fate, after a meeting in Tokyo, Tara stumbles upon a note stating “Don Returns” — bewilderment and anticipation flood her as she navigates the depths of her office campus searching for signs of Ved. Ultimately, the film circles back to the spectacle where Ved and Tara harmoniously blend their lives into a poignant tableau, bringing to life the story they have lived together, concluding the narrative they so desperately needed to understand.
