Sanzaemon Kanemi rises in the crowd and fatally wounds Lady Renko with his tantō. The hall erupts in chaos as guards move to seize him. Ukyo defies the expected punishment and sentences Kanemi to a year of house arrest, with his estate sealed and guarded.

Kanemi retreats to his sealed estate, watched over by soldiers. His only caregiver is his young niece Rio, who has tended him since her aunt's death years earlier. As months pass, Kanemi wrestles with guilt and the murky forces behind Renko's murder.

Flashbacks reveal Renko's clashes with senior officials, including Tsuda, over fiscal policy and temple renovations. Her push for lavish spending and higher taxes inflames famine-stricken farmers and arouses military figures like Obiya. The court's tensions hint at a larger political storm to come.
