Takechiyo [Ippei Shigeyama], the eldest son of shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu [Masaki Kyomoto], finds his life tangled in a shadowed gauntlet of assassination as a ruthless struggle for the shogunate’s succession heats up. Though the law names him the rightful heir, the ailing and increasingly irrational Iemitsu casts doubt over Takechiyo’s future, inviting intrigue and betrayal from those who would see him removed. Amid the court’s schemes, Abe Shigetsugu [Hiroki Matsukata], Iemitsu’s prime minister, quietly engineers a dangerous plan to install his own preferred candidate, the younger Tokugawa Tokumatsu, setting the stage for a collision course that could topple the entire lineage.
To safeguard the heir, seven rōnin from the Sakura clan are hired by Hotta Masamori [Tetsuro Tamba]. Their leader, Igō Gyōbu [Ken Ogata], is a figure forged by past loyalties and broken vows. Igō’s history reaches back to Oman Kata [Sayoko Ninomiya], Abe’s sister whom he once married before Iemitsu’s coercive charm reshaped their fates. This tangled web of personal ties and political ambition threads through every step of the mission.
On the road, Iba Shōemon [Sonny Chiba] and his guard close in, massacring Hotta’s retinue in a brutal display of power. Igō’s squad, meanwhile, had already pulled ahead with Takechiyo, joined by Hotta’s son Masatoshi [Takeshi Maya] and the loyal lady-in-waiting Yajima Tsubone [Miyuki Kanō], bound to the boy by trust, duty, and a stubborn belief that they can shoulder the cost of safeguarding a future ruler. What follows is a relentless chase across Japan’s wild landscapes, a test of endurance where every ambush and narrow escape tightens the group’s bond and magnifies the stakes.
One by one, the seven ronin sacrifice themselves to shield Takechiyo, a testament to their fierce devotion and the samurai code they have sworn to uphold. In the climactic clash, Igō Gyōbu meets Iba Shōemon in single combat, and the last stand ends with Igō’s death after he strikes down Iba. The pursuit ends not just in victory or defeat, but in a somber reckoning of loyalty, love, and the cost of power.
Arrival in Edo marks a grim turning point. Oman discovers a dagger Igō had given to Lady Yajima to protect Takechiyo, and she chooses restraint rather than vengeance. Takechiyo is summoned before his father and publicly renounces him, a bold affront that plunges Iemitsu into a rage he cannot quell. As Iemitsu makes a move to strike, Yajima steps between them, taking the fatal blow for the boy and falling to Iemitsu’s blade, a poignant moment that seals the elder man’s fate. Iemitsu dies, his illness framed as the ultimate end of his tyrannical ambition, while Abe Shigetsugu, disillusioned by his master’s cruelties, performs seppuku in quiet protest.
In the wake of these events, Takechiyo stands over the ashes of a shaken lineage. At Iemitsu’s funeral, he flings a handful of ash onto the name tablet—an act that speaks of rupture, memory, and the uneasy peace he seeks with the past. He recalls Igō not as a mere guardian, but as a father figure who shaped his sense of duty, leaving a lasting footprint on the boy who will carry the Tokugawa name into an uncertain future.
