Bob, portrayed by Josiah Polhemus, is a weary man in his forties, moving through life weighed down by a sense of disappointment and disillusionment. Each day melts into the next in a blur of aimlessness, with only the occasional drink providing a temporary escape from his internal struggles. Despite the well-meaning gestures of those around him, Bob feels increasingly isolated in his experience, as if these battles are solely his to fight. His narrative may not be unique; countless individuals face the daunting reality of their fortieth year, grappling with feelings of loss and a lack of direction. Yet, Bob’s story holds a distinct twist. Once revered as Captain Truth, a masked savior championing justice in the Bay Area, he now merely exists as Bob, facing the daunting task of accepting his new life.

Bob’s partner, Mimi, played by Amy Prosser, is entangled in her own set of challenges. Once filled with aspirations of becoming a museum curator in Rome, she finds herself trapped within the confines of a law firm, staring down the barrel of a potential promotion that may lead her further away from her true passions. As she ponders her future, Mimi wrestles with the uncertainty of whether this path truly aligns with her heart’s desires.

In a bid to alleviate Bob’s growing unrest and search for meaning, Mimi suggests he write a book. This decision prompts Bob to bring aboard Danniell, a keen and determined college English major whose lively spirit inspires him. As they collaborate, Danniell finds herself drawn to Bob, and her energy becomes infectious. However, as their bond deepens, Bob is faced with the dilemma of his emerging feelings for Danniell clashing against the reality of potentially losing Mimi, his steadfast partner.

Meanwhile, Mimi experiences a life-altering revelation: she is expecting a child. This news triggers a crisis of faith regarding her decisions, especially in light of Bob’s persistent unwillingness to embrace parenthood. As she navigates the emotional turbulence this development brings, she begins to question the practicality of her choices, even contemplating whether forgoing the child might be her most rational option.
