Detective Kirby and his partner Alexis finally corner the man behind the “Mr. Smiley” murders—Leslie Sykes—on the night of a rare planetary alignment that he believes will complete his macabre rite. He has lured a newborn into a clearing, hung the infant from the apex of a grotesque triangular framework that mirrors the blood‑stained symbol he has been carving into each crime scene. Holding a flare aloft, he begins a low chant as the sky erupts in an eerie, crimson aurora‑like glow, the phenomenon he claims marks the moment of his final sacrifice.

Just as Leslie prepares to plunge the child into the ritual, Kirby and Alexis burst into the clearing, gunfire shattering the silence. The shoot‑out leaves one officer dead and the other wounded, but the pair force Leslie to retreat into the darkness. He is soon found dead, his body a chilling testament to his own twisted handiwork: the leeches he once bred to torture his victims have devoured his face, turning his death into a grim, poetic retribution.

In the aftermath the baby is rescued, the triangular altars are dismantled, and the detectives finally have proof that Sykes’s killings were orchestrated according to a perverse star‑based calendar. The film ends on the stark image of the leech‑eaten corpse, a visual reminder that the monster’s own tools turned against him, bringing his reign of terror to a visceral, inevitable close.
