In the charming town of Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana, a kind-hearted beauty school graduate named Annelle Dupuy arrives, eager to start her new job at Truvy Jones’ quaint home-based salon. As excitement fills the air, M’Lynn Eatenton and her daughter Shelby are deeply involved in the preparations for Shelby’s wedding, scheduled to occur the same day. In a bid to ensure a perfect celebration, M’Lynn’s husband, Drum, takes to the outdoors with his trusty shotgun, hoping to shoo away any pesky birds from the ceremony site.

At the salon, the atmosphere buzzes with laughter and chatter as Clairee Belcher, the lively widow of the former mayor, joins Truvy and Shelby. However, the joyous moments take an unexpected turn when Shelby, despite battling diabetes, experiences a sudden hypoglycemic attack. Thanks to Truvy’s quick instincts and the support of those around her, she soon regains her strength. However, with wedding jitters looming, M’Lynn discloses that Shelby’s doctor has warned against her becoming pregnant, worrying that such a decision could complicate her relationship with Jackson.

At this moment, the spirited and outspoken Louisa “Ouiser” Boudreaux barges into the salon, bombarding Annelle with questions about her past life. In a heartfelt moment, Annelle opens up about her husband’s disappearance and the devastation it left her with, visually striking the sympathy chord within Shelby, who, in a gesture of kindness, invites Annelle to join the wedding festivities. At the reception, she encounters the charming bartender Sammy DeSoto, hinting at a new beginning.

As time goes by, Annelle finds peace in her faith during a lively Christmas festival; meanwhile, Clairee ascends to the role of owner of the local radio station, KPPD. In a surprising twist, Shelby announces her pregnancy, instigating joy among everyone except M’Lynn, who fears the potential complications due to her daughter’s condition. Truvy encourages M’Lynn to embrace the joyous occasion.

Shelby eventually gives birth to a son named Jackson Latcherie Jr., but her happiness is unfortunately overshadowed by a battle with kidney failure, requiring her to undergo frequent dialysis. Just as her baby approaches his first birthday, M’Lynn donates a kidney to save Shelby’s life. However, after a successful surgery, Shelby’s health takes a drastic turn, leading her into a coma following an infection linked to her medication. The family faces the gut-wrenching decision to withdraw life support, with Jackson ultimately making the heart-wrenching choice to consent.

In the aftermath of Shelby’s demise, M’Lynn leaves the hospital to visit Aunt Fern, picking up her cherished grandson amidst waves of grief. Surrounded by the solidarity of her friends, she finds solace and support as she navigates her emotions. Gradually, M’Lynn embraces the depth of her daughter’s self-sacrifice, which highlighted the essence of a mother’s love in its most fleeting form. Consequently, she redirects her energy towards assisting Jackson in raising their young grandson, ensuring that Shelby’s spirit lives on through the next generation.

In a twist of fate, Annelle, now glowing with expectancy after marrying Sammy, shares her heartfelt wish with M’Lynn to name her child after Shelby, a tribute to the serendipitous turn their lives took thanks to her influence. M’Lynn wholeheartedly backs Annelle’s heartfelt intention, imparting the wisdom: > “Life goes on.”
