What Happens in Stargazing: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Stargazing (2024) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Told from the perspective of an Akita dog named Happie, the story begins with his adoption by a working-class Japanese family. Happie spends several happy years with them, forming a particularly strong bond with the man of the house, whom he calls "Daddy". However, their stability is shattered when the man's wife requests a divorce, leaving him jobless, homeless, and nearly broke.

In an attempt to stay upbeat, Daddy takes Happie on a road trip toward southern Japan. During their journey, they encounter a young, disheveled boy trying to steal bread at a convenience store. In a gesture of kindness, Daddy buys the bread for him and allows the boy to hitch a ride. Despite the man's generosity, the boy eventually disappears in the night, stealing Daddy's wallet.

The hardships mount when Happie develops kidney stones. To afford the life-saving surgery, Daddy is forced to pawn almost every possession he owns. Eventually, the pair run out of gasoline near a campground. They survive for a time by scrounging for food and sleeping in their car until Daddy tragically passes away due to a pre-existing heart condition. Happie remains by his side for two more winters before also perishing. Their bodies are discovered months later, with Happie's loyal form resting at Daddy's feet.

The narrative then shifts to Okutsu, a middle-aged social worker tasked with identifying the deceased man. As Okutsu retraces Daddy's final steps, he reflects on his own life and his childhood memories of his grandfather, who built a large window for his sick wife to view a field of sunflowers. He recalls a lonely puppy he once owned that would stare at the stars for hours, as if dreaming of the impossible.

Ultimately, Okutsu views the bond between Daddy and Happie as a parable for human existence, concluding that everyone is like a stargazing dog, forever dreaming of reaching the unreachable. Because Daddy had destroyed all traces of his past, Okutsu authorizes the cremation of his remains as an unidentified person and scatters the ashes around Happie's grave, which rests fittingly in a field of sunflowers.

Why these movies?

The story pattern: These stories often begin with warmth and security, then reveal how economic strain, family breakdown, sickness, or social isolation steadily threatens the bond. Episodes of ordinary care build emotional weight, while illness, death, or forced separation turns companionship into a lasting lesson in loyalty, dignity, and remembrance.

Why they belong together: The grouping is driven by the same emotional mechanism: a nonhuman companion offers constancy in a world that keeps becoming unsafe. Their slow rhythms, sparse humor, and heavy themes of mortality and separation make the bond feel both comforting and painfully vulnerable.

Quiet, melancholy movies like Stargazing about grief and loss

Lives shaped by isolation and mortality end in solemn, fragile remembrance. If you liked Stargazing, discover quiet, melancholy films shaped by isolation, mortality, and memory. These slow-moving stories use restrained episodes and reflective transitions to trace lives marked by hardship, then linger on grief, remembrance, and small moments of dignity after loss.

  • melancholic
  • reflective
  • lonely
  • somber
  • nostalgic
  • grief
  • Tone: melancholic, somber, reflective
  • Pacing: slow, contemplative
Why these movies?

The story pattern: The narrative pattern moves from present-day strain into memories that clarify what has truly been lost. Episodes of work, separation, illness, and caregiving accumulate quietly; the final movement turns toward farewell and remembrance, offering emotional closure without consolation or relief.

Why they belong together: These films share a subdued, episodic form and a grave emotional register. Their pacing leaves room for silence, recollection, and ordinary gestures, while high emotional weight and sad endings turn hardship into an elegy for relationships and possibilities that cannot be recovered.
