In 1991 South Africa, fifteen-year-old John ‘Spud’ Milton [Troye Sivan] is entering his second year at an elite boarding school, reuniting with the quirky crew known as the Crazy Eight. This tight-knit group quickly finds itself under pressure from the school’s authority figures: the stern housemaster Mr. “The Guv” Edly [John Cleese] and the hard-nosed supervisor Mr. “Sparerib” Wilson [Jason Cope], whose power looms large over the campus. The trio of prefects who bully others add to a tense atmosphere, creating a climate where ambition and rebellion clash with tradition and discipline.
The Crazy Eight dream up rebellious weekends to carve out their own space within the confines of the school. They forge weekend passes, slip out quietly, and even land enough money to win a hot dog eating contest at a local farm show. Their audacious stunt catches the eye of the school, and when a newspaper report reaches the Glock [Jeremy Crutchley], the housemaster who embodies the system’s appetite for control, Spud and his friends are not only banned from the Midlands Festival, but placed on final warning. The stakes are clear: defy the rules and risk serious consequences.
Undeterred, Spud and his friends hatch a reckless plan to outmaneuver Sparerib and the prefects. While Sparerib is away buying cigarettes, they sneak into his house and film a private moment between Rambo [Sven Ruygrok] and Mrs Eve Wilson [Tanit Phoenix], often referred to as Eve. When Sparerib returns, the Crazy Eight slip away, and Eve’s decisive push of Rambo out of the doorway further destabilizes the delicate power balance at the school. The mood is electric with mischief, but the consequences loom large as secrets threaten to tip the scales.
Meanwhile, Spud learns that the Guv has considered an early retirement, a possibility that could upend the balance of authority on campus. He convinces the Guv to stay and fight to preserve as much of the Crazy Eight’s world as possible. As tensions mount, the crew retreats into a forest hideout and declares outright war against Sparerib and the prefects. A new challenge arises: they’re forced to audition for a school play called Noah’s Ark, a task that squeezes them into the rigid rituals of school life even as they resist them.
The climate worsens during a house social when Mad Dog [Josh Goddard] uses his influence to push another group of bullies—the Normal Seven—into humiliating a group of schoolgirls. The Glock responds with firm discipline, placing Mad Dog on absolute final warning and threatening expulsion. The war intensifies as Sparerib and the prefects infiltrate the forest, exposing the Crazy Eight’s hideout and coercing Spud to confess everything in his diary. The Glock then expels Rambo and Mad Dog and puts the remaining Crazy Eight on absolute final warning, followed by a three-week suspension.
Spud’s eye for opportunity leads him to a flyer for the Midlands Festival. He hatches a bold scheme to win back Rambo and strike at Sparerib and the prefects. He delivers to Sparerib a copy of the incriminating tape and persuades the Guv to take him and the Crazy Eight to the Midlands Festival for another hot dog challenge. Sparerib, having learned of the tape’s existence, closes in and follows them with the aim of expulsion. Yet Spud turns the situation to his advantage by sparking a chaotic food fight that puts Sparerib and the prefects in a precarious position, threatening their control.
In a climactic turn, the Glock confronts the escalating tension. He expels the former prefects from privilege and contemplates harsher punishments, but the Guv steps in with a crucial revelation about Sparerib’s threats to expel Spud and the others. The tape is produced as undeniable evidence, and the Glock is persuaded to rethink. With a renewed sense of purpose, he allows Spud and his friends to remain at the school and asks them to keep the Eve-and-Rambo tape a secret. In a final twist, Sparerib is fired from his position as housemaster, Rambo is reunited with his friends, and the Crazy Eight are celebrated for their daring, resilience, and teamwork.
As the credits roll, Spud reflects on what they’ve achieved, even if they haven’t earned a place on the Honors Board in the Great Hall. They have instead carved their own memorable mark in the annals of their school’s history.
We may not have earned a place on our Honors Board in the Great Hall. We proudly carved our names to the mad history of our school.
