Janina Duszejko lives in a remote Polish valley with her two dogs. After giving a local woman a ride to the store, her dogs vanish, setting off the central mystery of the story. Duszejko begins to suspect that the animals’ deaths will be connected to the surrounding hunting culture.

Duszejko confronts her neighbor 'Big Foot', a notorious poacher whose traps cause animal suffering. She accuses him of contributing to the dogs’ disappearance and challenges his ruthless hunting practices. The clash marks the beginning of a tense, adversarial relationship with the local hunters.

One night, Matoga awakens Duszejko to tell her that Big Foot has been killed. The news ripples through the village, foreshadowing a broader set of violent events. Duszejko starts to sense that the incidents may be connected to something larger than animal traps.

The local police chief questions Duszejko about her missing dogs, but dismisses her concerns as superstition and bluster. He seems more interested in maintaining order than pursuing any real leads related to the animals. Duszejko feels marginalized by law enforcement.

After meeting with Duszejko, the police chief meets with local businessman Wnetrzak and receives an ultimatum about money he owes him. The encounter exposes corruption and the corrupting influence of wealth on local authorities. Duszejko’s case is further sidelined.

Duszejko visits the village priest to complain about the loss of her dogs, but she is chastised for treating animals like humans, which the church views as blasphemous. The scene underscores the social hostility toward her beliefs. Her isolation deepens.

Disturbed by the hunting activity, Duszejko attempts to interrupt a local hunt but is stopped and humiliated by Wnetrzak and his supporters. The event shows the hunters’ power and the limits of her protest. It heightens her resolve to expose what she sees as a deadly pattern.

In the winter, Duszejko and Dyzio—an IT expert working for the police—find the police chief's abandoned vehicle at night and discover his body nearby. Animal tracks are present near the scene, reinforcing Duszejko’s theory that animals play a role. The discovery shifts the mystery from disappearances to a possible murder investigation.

At the prosecutor's office, Duszejko explains the animal tracks she found and offers an astrology-based theory. The prosecutor dismisses her ideas as superstition. The moment emphasizes the conflict between her unconventional beliefs and official procedures.

Duszejko grows closer to Dyzio and Dobra Nowina, who works for Wnetrzak by day and in his brothel by night. Dyzio is grateful that Duszejko kept his epilepsy a secret, protecting his job. The trio’s bond strengthens as they navigate danger together.

Dobra Nowina's younger brother is being abused by their father, and she learns that Wnetrzak has reported her as unfit twice. The family turmoil reveals how power is used to control and intimidate vulnerable people. The stakes for Dobra Nowina rise as she faces legal threats.

In the forest, Duszejko meets Czech entomologist Boros Schneider, and they begin a romantic relationship. He explains pheromones that attract certain beetles, deepening Duszejko's connection to the natural world. The summer setting marks a shift from winter’s hostility to a warmer personal alliance.

Boros informs Duszejko that Wnetrzak's body has been in the forest for months, and that Duszejko's pheromones may have attracted beetles to him. The discovery ties together earlier killings and Duszejko's theories, further coloring the investigation with suspicion against her. The line between science and superstition blurs as the case deepens.

Matoga, Dyzio, Dobra Nowina, and Boros help Duszejko plan an escape from town; Dyzio cuts the power to enable their departure. The group leaves behind the corrupt milieu and travels toward a neighboring country. In the final scene, Duszejko, with two new dogs, sits down to lunch with her companions and wonders about a hopeful future.
