As Christmas approaches the following year, Kit’s diagnosis of needing an appendectomy serves as a catalyst for him to confront his parents, Bob (Bill Irwin) and Marilyn (Sally Field), who remain unaware of his sexual orientation. Sensing a shift, Marilyn’s suspicion about Michael grows, leading Kit to finally disclose the truth about his boyfriend. Although initially startled by this revelation, Marilyn welcomes Michael into their family with open arms.

Years pass, and Michael and Kit build a life together, sharing a charming townhouse and fulfilling Michael’s childhood dream of celebrating Christmas together. However, in 2013, their relationship begins to fray as issues arise in their intimacy and Michael becomes increasingly absorbed in his work at TVLine, turning to alcohol for solace. Compounding these issues, he grows suspicious of Kit’s connection with a coworker, Sebastian (Antoni Porowski), which deepens the rift between them.

The therapist recommends a trial separation, a challenging yet essential step for them to gain clarity on their feelings. As 2014 dawns, tragedy strikes when Kit is diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of neuroendocrine cancer, further devastating an already tenuous existence. This heartbreaking situation propels Michael to revisit their cherished memories and leads to a powerful reconciliation filled with love and regret. Amid Kit’s relentless battle with cancer, Michael proves to be his steadfast support, standing by him as they confront one of life’s darkest passages.

As Kit’s condition deteriorates, an agonizing prognosis reveals that he has only weeks left to live. In this bleak moment, Michael bravely faces his deepest fears, apologizing for failing to recognize Kit’s worth, concerned he might lose him to someone more alluring. Amidst this unimaginable environment, Michael envisions conducting an interview with Kit, as if he were a character whose story is reaching its poignant conclusion. Kit expresses gratitude for the moments they shared, comforting Michael that he will find his way after he’s gone. In a heartfelt farewell, Michael thanks Kit for embodying the essence of family, a bond that will forever resonate within him.

After Kit’s passing, Michael maintains a close relationship with Bob and Marilyn, serving as a constant reminder of the love they cherished.
