Ravunni, Thoma's teacher, is pressured to fail him so Chacko can push Thoma to study harder. Enraged by this manipulation, Thoma burns the answer sheet and, in a fit of anger, stabs Balu's right hand with a compass. Scorned, he runs away from the village, beginning a life apart from his father.
