Every Sunday, the Joseph family gathers for a big meal in their Chicago home, a tradition Big Mama keeps alive. Ahmad, the 11-year-old narrator, watches how the siblings juggle success, secrets, and love while staying tightly bound by kinship. The dinners are the emotional anchor of the film until tensions begin to surface.

During a leg-amputation operation, Big Mama suffers a stroke and slips into a coma. Five weeks later she briefly awakens to offer Ahmad one last word of guidance before dying.

With Big Mama gone, the family starts to fracture under long‑held resentments and unspoken hurts. The absence of her steady wisdom leaves cracks that threaten the Sunday dinners and the family’s unity.

Teri takes in her troubled cousin Faith, who quickly bonds with Miles over the arts. Miles quits his secure job as a lawyer to chase his dream of becoming an R&B musician, a move that Teri does not fully support.

Faith and Miles are discovered having sex by Teri, triggering a volatile confrontation at Kenny and Maxine's anniversary party. The heated moment nearly erupts into violence as family tensions boil over.

Lem is fired after being caught lying about his criminal record, and Bird tries to help him land a new job through her ex, Simuel St. James. Simuel insults Bird during the process, and Lem responds with violence by assaulting Simuel, leading to his dismissal.

Teri brings in her cousin Blimp to 'teach Lem a lesson,' but a fight between Blimp and Lem escalates when Lem pulls a gun. The confrontation draws police involvement and Lem is arrested on assault and illegal gun charges.
