Konrad Ludwig is a handsome young stranger who becomes fascinated by a castle near the Bavarian village of Ornstein. He dreams of owning and living in the castle, which belongs to the widowed Countess Herthe von Ornstein and sits in the dower house, unable to open the main fortress to the public or to the world. Driven by ambition and a taste for adventure, he sets his sights on slipping into the countess’s service and manipulating the castle’s future for his own gain.

To pull off his plan, he lures the money of a young, wealthy debutante, Anneliese Pleschke, daughter of a nouveau riche couple, hoping her fortune will fund the reopening of the castle. The plan hinges on manipulating status and love: a pairing that would legitimize his stake in Ornstein. After a sun-drenched afternoon chauffeuring the Pleschkes through the countryside, Rudolph, the countess’s loyal footman, is dragged into Konrad’s scheme. He gets Rudolph drunk at a local Biergarten, and the ensuing tragedy—Rudolph is run over by a train—clears the way for Konrad to take Rudolph’s place inside the countess’s household.

Within the castle, the family dynamics are tangled. The countess’s children, Helmuth von Ornstein, a shy and attractive young man, and Lotte von Ornstein, a plain and interfering girl, become central to Konrad’s calculated games. The stern majordomo, Klaus, initially tries to stop Konrad by firing him, suspecting trouble behind the charming façade. The local political climate adds a dangerous edge: the mayor of Ornstein is determined to root out lingering Nazis, and Konrad discovers Klaus’s father was a Nazi colonel—an intimate, troubling memory that Klaus keeps in his private spaces. The revelation leads to Klaus’s quiet dismissal from service, removing a barrier to Konrad’s manipulation.

With the majordomo out of the way, Konrad can continue his dual romances, becoming a confidant and lover to both [Helmuth] and [Anneliese], while secretly assuring each that he will always stand by their side in the castle’s future. He urges the countess to host a grand, expensive party at the dower house, a move designed to cement a pseudo-romance between Helmuth and Anneliese and to attract further investments. The couple signs a marriage contract, and funds flow from the Pleschke fortune to reopen and refurbish the estate.

The marriage, however, does not go smoothly. The honeymoon proves disastrous as both bride and groom begin to question the arrangement. Anneliese, discovering Konrad and Helmuth’s kiss, confronts her parents. In a perilous twist, Konrad persuades them to share a ride in a limousine to the castle, but at a sharp bend, he deliberately presses the vehicle toward the embankment. He escapes with a broken leg, while Anneliese and her parents die in the crash. The scandalous plan seems to collapse, but Konrad survives and begins to recover in the company of the countess, who becomes his new romantic interest as the wedding of Helmuth and Anneliese remains a bitter memory for everyone involved.

As the dust settles, Helmuth is crushed by the events, and Lotte uses her intimate knowledge of Konrad’s murderous exploits to manipulate the situation. She engineers a perilous game of blackmail that forces Konrad to marry her instead of her mother, turning the former conspirator into a captive of his own schemes. The castle’s fate hangs on whose interests prevail—Konrad’s ruthless ambition, the countess’s shifting affections, or the siblings’ calculated moves—leaving a story where desire, deception, and danger intertwine within the stone walls of Ornstein.
