In 1906 San Francisco, Blossom Seely performs at a club when a powerful earthquake rattles the city. The disaster disrupts the show and forces a reevaluation of the local entertainment scene. The event marks a volatile beginning that will lead to bigger opportunities for Blossom.

After the quake, the Grauman Vaudeville theatre is the first to reopen. Blossom arrives with her friends Essie and Sam and learns that Nola Beach holds the top billing. The tension between established acts and new talent underpins the postquake excitement.

Nola performs Toddling the Todalo, while Essie directs a monkey onto the stage. The monkey eats a banana and tosses the peel at Nola, sending her offstage in embarrassment. Blossom rushes on to finish the number in Nola's stead.
