Somebody Loves Me

In 1906 San Francisco, Blossom Seeley, Betty Hutton, is a club performer when a powerful earthquake shakes the city. The Grauman Vaudeville theatre soon reopens as the first big stage in town, and Nola Beach, Adele Jergens, sits at the top of its billing. Blossom arrives with friends Essie, Billie Bird, and Sam Doyle, Robert Keith, hoping for a chance to shine.

During a rehearsal, Blossom quietly requests to perform the song Toddling the Todalo, only to discover that Nola will be taking the number first. As Nola performs to a crowded audience, Essie mischievously directs a monkey onto the stage. The animal snatches a banana, then hurls the peel at Nola, causing her to rush offstage in a hurry. Seizing the moment, Blossom darts on and begins singing in place of Nola, her voice catching the crowd by surprise.

Blossom’s impromptu turn launches her into sudden fame as San Francisco’s premier vaudeville star, a rise that brings attention from both peers and patrons. Onstage, Benny Fields, [Ralph Meeker], joins with his friends Forrest, [Henry Slate], and Henry, [Sid Tomack], for a lively number that captures the energy of the era. Blossom, drawn to their act, invites Benny to collaborate with her, and soon she performs as a duo with Benny, Forrest and Henry to thunderous applause. After a disagreement, the trio decides to part ways and pursue their own paths.

The duo of Blossom and Benny debuts in Vaudeville, their chemistry drawing steady cheers from audiences. Yet Benny’s habit of being late to rehearsals frustrates Blossom, who confronts him. He confesses that he’s been seeing another woman, and he jokes that if Blossom were to marry him, the act would be ruined—only to drop a shocking line: Blossom will be the bride. They marry, blending romance with showmanship, and Blossom expects the partnership to endure.

Vacation aside, Blossom returns with Benny’s arrival in question, and he shows up in her room with news: he must leave their act and reveals that he married her for fame. Back on stage, Blossom performs solo to widespread acclaim, though backstage she feels a hollow ache without Benny’s presence.

Benny, now pursuing his own act as a stooge with modest pay, still cares for Blossom and reconnects with Sam. Sam urges him to talk to Blossom, and when he does, the pair reunite. Benny asks not to have Blossom arrange work for him out of guilt, but a few months later, he finally lands a gig. Backstage, he overhears organizers discussing how Blossom helped secure the job by pulling strings, a revelation that tests their bond.

Confronting Blossom, Benny learns that she did pull strings—and she admits it. He resolves to quit after one last performance, but Sam warns that Blossom might quit if he quits first. In the finale, Blossom takes the stage to sing Somebody Loves Me, joined by Benny in a hopeful harmony, and the couple share a tender kiss as the audience erupts in applause.
