In the vibrant and action-packed story of this film, Vasanthapuri faces a grave threat when the Portuguese seek to establish a military base in their territory, located in Tamil Nadu, India. The intruders approach Diwan, the corrupt ruler of the region, played by M. N. Nambiar, and entice him with the offer of becoming the king if he cooperates. Driven by ambition, Diwan agrees, but his decision sparks widespread unrest among the native people, who feel betrayed and endangered. Their protests lead to brutal violence, as Diwan begins suppressing dissent by killing numerous locals, escalating the chaos and despair in the region.

Amidst this turmoil is Ananth, a young man who loses his father in a violent shootout caused by Diwan’s oppressive forces. Deeply hurting and angry, Ananth vows to seek justice, especially when his close friend Bharat, the son of the Inspector General Chandrasekar, played by Sivaji Ganesan, returns from abroad. Bharat’s return marks a turning point in the fight against Diwan’s tyranny, as he is determined to protect the homeland and its people.

Simultaneously, the story introduces the beautiful and noble Chithralekha, the princess of Vasanthapuri, who is living in Zurich, Switzerland. She is initially unaware of the peril threatening her homeland until she notices her own country’s name in a newspaper, accompanied by her description. She learns that her hometown is in danger due to the Portuguese invasion, igniting her resolve to help. She also discovers that Bharat has excelled academically at the University of Bern and becomes interested in meeting him. Their paths cross at a social club, where Chithralekha introduces herself as “Vasanthi” to conceal her true identity, and she congratulates Bharat for his academic achievements. Their encounter marks the beginning of a mutual affection, and as they spend time touring across Europe, their bond deepens.

However, their happiness is shattered when Chithralekha receives distressing news about her homeland. She decides to return to India, and Bharat, moved by her dedication, chooses to accompany her. During their flight, a complication arises when a flight attendant announces that Diwan plans to marry the princess and will meet her at the airport. Chithralekha is uneasy with this plan and tries to alter their course, but her efforts are thwarted by the crew. A fierce struggle ensues when Bharat fights the flight attendant, causing the aircraft to spiral out of control and eventually crash into the sea. Believed to have perished, Bharat and Chithralekha are washed ashore on an uninhabited island, where they are rescued and cared for by local doctors. With their strength restored, a special raft is arranged to bring them back home.

It’s then revealed that Vasanthi is actually Princess Chithralekha, a fact she keeps a secret to protect herself and her people. Bharat recognizes her true identity, but she urges him to simply see her as his lover, not as a princess, to shield her from harm. Returning to Vasanthapuri, they arrive at Ananth’s house, where he is overjoyed to see Bharat alive. Yet, Chithralekha continues her disguise, hiding her royal identity from everyone except Bharat. The chaos intensifies as Diwan’s oppressive regime persists, and his soldiers continue slaughtering protesters, leading to the death of Ananth and his mother. This tragedy fuels Bharat and his allies’ determination to fight for justice and freedom.

In their covert operations against Diwan’s forces, they seek refuge in a bar owned by Nagesh, who becomes their ally. As they work tirelessly to expose Diwan and liberate Vasanthapuri, Chithralekha finally reveals her true identity during a critical moment, shocking everyone. Diwan swiftly kidnaps her and escapes aboard a hot air balloon, but Bharat manages to catch up. An intense confrontation ensues in which Bharat courageously fights and ultimately kills Diwan, bringing peace back to their land. The story concludes with the joyous union of Bharat and Chithralekha, symbolizing hope, courage, and the triumph of good over evil.

“Vasanthapuri is free once again,” as the brave heroes restore peace and happiness to their homeland.
