As Patrizio “Pat” Solitano Jr. (Robert De Niro), steps out of the mental health facility after enduring a grueling eight months, he is met with the warm embrace of his childhood home in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. His parents, Patrizio Sr. and Dolores (affectionately waiting for his return), are eager to welcome him back. Pat is primarily focused on reconciliation—specifically, he yearns to mend things with his estranged wife, Nikki. However, the road to redemption is fraught with challenges, as Pat’s past violent episodes leave him wrestling with the fear of being sent back to the clinic if he fails to adhere to his medication schedule.

In the wings, Pat’s therapist, Cliff Patel (Bradley Cooper), endeavors to help him adopt a healthier perspective by stressing the significance of his medication. Yet, Pat has undergone a profound transformation, propelled by an unyielding drive to discover the silver linings in life’s experiences. This newfound positivity faces a rigorous trial as he grapples with anxiety attacks that threaten to derail his progress.

Pat’s social life receives a much-needed boost during a dinner at his best friend Ronnie’s home, where they are joined by Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence), a widow dealing with her own psychological concerns. During the lavish meal, Pat and Tiffany engage in an open exchange about their mental health challenges, sharing insights about their respective medications. In a surprising move, Tiffany makes a pass at Pat, yet his heart remains steadfastly set on winning Nikki back.

Determined to showcase his commitment to growth, Pat agrees to partner with Tiffany for an upcoming dance competition. Meanwhile, Patrizio Sr. attempts to make ends meet through clandestine bookmaking in pursuit of his dream restaurant. His latest gamble on a Philadelphia Eagles game spirals him into financial turmoil, prompting a humorous plea to Pat for companionship during the match—an irrational ask that Pat cheekily attributes to his father’s OCD tendencies. When Tiffany informs Pat of a letter from Nikki, filled with cautious optimism hinting at reconciliation, he eagerly seeks time off from practice to attend the game.

As the stadium looms ahead, a heated confrontation with racist fans leads to Pat and his brother Jake being arrested, overshadowing the Eagles’ painful loss and igniting his father’s ire. In the midst of all this chaos, Pat must confront the harsh realities of his past, present, and apprehensions about the future, holding tightly to the hope that Nikki will ultimately reconcile with him.

As the night progresses, Tiffany’s anxiety peaks upon spotting Nikki in the audience, prompting her to drink excessively in an effort to cope.

Just when it seems that hope is dwindling, Pat comes to Tiffany’s rescue, pulling her away from despair and onto the dance floor just moments before their performance begins. The couple’s dance unfolds amid the euphoric atmosphere following the Eagles’ victory, resulting in an average score of 5.0 points, leaving both familiar faces and strangers bewildered.
