Colin moved to Hope, Vermont to escape his heartbreak and start fresh. After being dumped by his childhood love Vera, he deliberately chose a town with the most hopeful name he could find, seeking a new beginning far from the painful memories of his past relationship.

When Colin asked for 'rubbers' at a local shop, he meant erasers (British term), but the American locals thought he was asking for condoms. This linguistic mix-up created a playful cultural clash that amused the town and highlighted the everyday misunderstandings between British and American speakers.

Joanie, the inn's flamboyant manager, noticed Colin's deep melancholy and decided to help him by introducing him to Mandy, a kind-hearted nursing home attendant. She believed Mandy's free-spirited warmth and optimistic nature could break through Colin's emotional reserve and help him heal.

Vera returns to Hope when she learns Colin has moved on and is building a new life with Mandy. Determined to win him back, she refuses to accept their twenty-year relationship is truly over and begins aggressively pursuing him, using their shared history as leverage.

Vera exploits Mandy's insecurities about being a replacement and subtly manipulates Colin's memories of their twenty-year history together. By reminding him of their past and creating emotional pressure, she attempts to undermine his developing feelings for Mandy and pull him back into their old relationship.

During a confrontation in Vera's hotel room, a smoking incident triggered the fire alarm, forcing an evacuation in front of the inn. Mandy witnessed Colin leaving Vera's room and incorrectly believed he had chosen to go back to his ex, creating a painful misunderstanding between Colin and Mandy.

Colin traded a flattering oil portrait of Hope's mayor to secure a favor. He revealed that Vera's genealogical ties to Hope were a complete ruse, he had fabricated the story to give her a reason to stay focused on becoming Queen of Hope's festival rather than chasing him. This strategic deception finally convinced Vera to let go.

Colin proposes to Mandy with a vintage butterfly engagement ring engraved with their names. The butterfly motif represents their relationship, Mandy's love of butterflies and the transformation Colin underwent in Hope. It symbolizes their shared journey from his heartbreak to healing and their future together.

After proposing, Colin carries Mandy back to the inn across town as a romantic gesture, waving to townsfolk along the way. Despite Mandy warning him about his back, he persists because he wants to demonstrate his commitment and joy, creating a tender, celebratory moment that cements their reunion.

Joanie tells Mandy that Colin's cousin was supposed to meet him at Hope Springs but Colin forgot to cancel. Joanie suggests Mandy pick him up instead, which becomes the setup for Colin to surprise her with his proposal at that location.
