Anna, who has been the housemaid for an old lady since childhood, inherits her beautiful apartment after her passing. This event marks her transition from a housemaid to a property owner, though she continues working in a cafe to support herself. The apartment represents both her inheritance and her livelihood amid her financial struggles.

Anna faces ongoing difficulties trying to cover the expenses associated with the luxurious building complex she owns. Despite her inheritance, her limited income from her job makes it hard to maintain her lifestyle, putting her in a vulnerable financial position. Her only close connection is her fiancé, Carlo, but she remains mostly alone in her struggles.

Augusto, the wise caretaker of the building, shows Anna some fatherly affection and support, while Talloni, the greedy administrator, aims to exploit Anna's financial difficulties. Talloni plans to buy the apartment below its value through a figurehead, intending to take control of her property for his own gain.

Augusto and the lawyer Sassi uncover Talloni's plan to exploit Anna's debts by acquiring her apartment unfairly. They realize the administrator’s scheme and start to devise a strategy to protect Anna’s interests and prevent her from being dispossessed of her property.

The group manages to delay the official decision to force Anna to repay her debts. They attempt to secure her a loan through the bank or other wealthy contacts to help her keep her apartment and avoid eviction, buying her some crucial time to find a solution.

To generate additional income, Anna and her supporters come up with the idea for her to rent out her apartment to an older couple. This arrangement allows her to stay in the building while still addressing her financial needs, with Augusto remaining as the caretaker and housemaid.

While trying to resolve Anna's financial issues, Sassi, the lawyer, fears irritating his jealous wife with too much involvement, and Augusto must defend his job from Talloni’s efforts to dismiss him. Meanwhile, other tenants are generally supportive but tend to be self-centered, complicating the collective effort.

Augusto voluntarily and even through trickery gathers all the neighbors for a crucial meeting to reveal Talloni's scheme and plot a course of action. His selfless effort is pivotal in uniting the tenants against the administrator's plans and protecting Anna’s interests.

Thanks to Augusto’s intervention, the tenants expose Talloni’s exploitative plan. A compromise arrangement is finally reached, preventing the administrator from taking control of Anna's apartment and providing her a chance to retain her home.

The tenants’ collective action results in a resolution that protects Anna’s property and alleviates her financial burden. Although the future remains uncertain, her community’s support signifies a hopeful turning point for her stability.
