Anna, who has served as the housemaid for an elderly lady since childhood, inherits a beautiful apartment from her former employer. Despite this fortunate gift, she now works in a café to make ends meet but finds it difficult to keep up with the costs associated with living in a luxurious housing complex. She faces loneliness and financial hardships, with her only source of comfort being her loving fiancé, Carlo, and the wise caretaker of the building, Augusto, who shows her some fatherly affection amidst her struggles.

The story highlights the greed and harshness of the building’s administrator, a tyrannical dentist named Talloni, who scheme to exploit Anna’s financial difficulties. Talloni intends to buy her apartment at a fraction of its true value through a front company, aiming to take advantage of her vulnerability. However, Augusto and the building’s lawyer, Avv. Sassi, become aware of this malicious plan and unite to protect Anna’s interests. They work passionately to delay any official foreclosure or forced repayment, first by attempting to secure her a loan either through the bank or a better-off neighbor’s connections.

While these efforts help buy time, they recognize that a long-term solution is still needed. An innovative idea surfaces: Anna could rent out her apartment to an older couple, allowing her to continue living there while remaining in her role as housemaid and caretaker, thus maintaining her connection to her home. Nonetheless, this situation doesn’t resolve all of her problems. Everyone involved must contend with other obstacles, such as Sassi’s worry about upsetting his jealous wife if he gets too involved, Augusto’s need to defend his job from Talloni’s intent to dismiss him, and the challenges posed by less concerned but decent neighbors.

Throughout this struggle, Augusto demonstrates selfless dedication, even resorting to some cunning measures to unite residents and expose Talloni’s schemes during an important meeting. Thanks to his efforts and the collective resistance of the tenants, the administrator’s plans are thwarted, leading to a mutually acceptable compromise that safeguards Anna’s home and gives her a chance to face her future with hope.
