Fred J. Johnson lands a hole-in-one during a round of golf and signs the ball with his initials and the date. He tees up with the same ball again and sends it into a ditch, where he discovers a dead woman and a package containing plates for forging dollar bills.

He retrieves the package from the ditch and realizes it contains plates for forging dollar bills. He pockets the package and contemplates his next move, choosing not to alert the police for the moment.

The returning murderer and his wife find Fred's marked golf ball with the initials F.J. and infer that he took the package. They warn Fred not to go to the police, threatening to kill him and his family if he interferes.

Back at home, Fred opens the package and discovers an address to a print shop that holds the plates. He decides not to alert the authorities because of the threats against his family.

In a tense scene with their boss Lefty, Fred and his partner are chastised for losing the package, with a warning of punishment hinted while he doodles over a game of Patience.

The murder becomes front-page news the next day, increasing the sense of danger around the Johnson family. Fred discovers his lucky charm is missing from his watch chain, hinting at the reach of the case into his personal life.

Carol goes out on a date with banker Mark Bellaman, while Ginny accompanies her young beau Lester Binkey to the golf course. Their outings provide a counterpoint to the crime plot and heighten the stakes for the family.

While examining the location where the body was found, Ginny discovers her father's lucky charm still attached to the scene. The discovery links Fred more directly to the crime and raises the emotional stakes for the family.

The murderer returns to the golf club under the guise of investigating the crime and bullies a gardener into giving him the list of players from the previous day. He overhears Ginny speaking his name and realizes she is Fred's daughter.

The killer pretends to be an old friend of Fred and offers to drive Ginny home, trying to blend in as part of the investigation while the danger grows around the family.

Fred attempts to mail the forged plates to the police anonymously, but is followed by Lefty, only thwarted when a policeman friend of Fred's intervenes. The tension escalates as the chase unfolds.

Ginny is called to speak with Lt. Braden about the murder, and Fred's account contradicts Lester's version, raising the detective's suspicions. Braden orders his man Sellers to tail Fred.

That night, Lefty and his gang kidnap Ginny and demand the plates as ransom. An exchange attempt ends in tragedy when Tony shoots Edna as she screams, and Fred knocks Tony down with a golf club.

Fred confronts Lefty with the golf club as the authorities close in, and Lefty sits down to await the arrival of the police.

The next day, newspapers declare Fred a hero who stopped the murderer and protected his family. The Johnsons are reunited in happiness after the ordeals.
