Pilot Officer Maude Garrett arrives in Samoa carrying a top-secret package, immediately facing skepticism from the Allied aircrew aboard the B-17 bomber named 'The Fool's Errand.' Despite the crew's initial dismissive attitude, she is grudgingly allowed on board, setting the stage for the unfolding drama.

Feeling the skepticism of the crew, Maude is confined to the empty Sperry ball turret, subtly handing over her document valise to the supportive USAAF dorsal gunner, Walter Quaid. This isolation prompts Maude’s feelings of frustration and determination as she navigates her precarious situation.

As the B-17 bomber takes off, Maude's instincts alert her to an aircraft concealed in the clouds. Navigator Bradley Finch confirms her observation, only for the crew to mock her initial claim, leading to an ongoing tension during the flight as Maude tries to prove her worth.

To the crew's amusement, Maude spots a winged creature attached to the aircraft's surface, prompting both disbelief and ridicule among her fellow crew members. However, she soon finds a supporter in tail gunner Stu Beckell, who validates her sighting and offers encouragement amidst the crew’s derision.

After managing to escape the confines of the turret, Maude is suddenly trapped again due to a malfunctioning hatch. Frustration turns to fury as the crew ceases their attempts to help her, leading to her moment of desperation when she spots a Japanese aircraft signaling danger.

Just as Captain Reeves plans to return to base, three Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighters launch a surprise attack. In the midst of chaos, the gremlin seizes the opportunity to strike, abducting Maude’s infant and severely wounding Quaid, propelling Maude into a frantic rescue effort.

In a climactic moment, Maude faces the gremlin one last time as it attempts to snatch her child again. Summoning all her courage, she defeats the creature, finally securing her child's safety amidst the destruction surrounding them.
