Menaka [Madhoo] leaves the baby near Rishi Kanva’s hermitage before returning to heaven, setting in motion a tale that blends divine origins with earthly romance. In the heat of summer, King [Dev Mohan] Dushyanta pursues a graceful antelope in the forest, only to be halted by an ascetic who warns that the creature belongs to Kanva’s sacred domain and asks him to honor the land’s sanctity. The hunter agrees, and the ascetic invites him to visit the ashrama, where he is told he will be welcomed by Shakuntala [Samantha Ruth Prabhu], Kanva’s adopted daughter, in the sage’s absence. When Dushyanta enters, he finds three radiant young women tending the plants and is immediately drawn to Shakuntala, though he keeps his real identity veiled. From a lively exchange with the trio, he learns that Shakuntala’s true lineage traces back to Vishvamitra and Menaka, a revelation that underscores her suitability as a bride of royal Kshatriya blood. Yet the king resists naming himself, preferring to remain incognito as he experiences a growing, almost magnetic, closeness with Shakuntala.

The gathering disperses only when an elephant goes amok near the ashrama. Dushyanta orders his general to restore order and to keep the place untouched, even as he wrestles with a longing he cannot admit aloud. He confides in his jester Vidushaka about the depth of his feelings and asks for a pretext to linger without arousing suspicion. Soon, a group of ascetics arrives with a modest request: they need protection for their yajna, and Dushyanta readily agrees to help. He dispatches Vidushaka back to the capital, then stays behind to watch over the ritual. Shakuntala, in turn, gathers the same quiet strength in the wake of his departure, and she finds herself confessing her love for him. Their bond deepens, and the two are wed according to gandharva rites, a union conducted with mutual consent and a shared sense of destiny. Before parting for the capital, Dushyanta promises to send a suitable guard to escort Shakuntala to his realm.

But the serenity of the newlyweds is tested when Durvasa arrives, irate and impatient, and Shakuntala’s attentiveness to hospitality falters in her preoccupation with her husband’s memory. The sharp-tempered sage curses her, declaring that the man she longs for would forget her completely. Anasuya [Ananya Nagalla], a loyal friend, explains the nature of the curse and pleads for mercy, and Durvasa relents slightly, agreeing that the memory could return if the beloved husband recognizes her through a token of recognition. Yet the danger of the curse is real: Shakuntala’s companions decide not to overwhelm her with the truth, and she remains convinced that her husband will remember her when the time is right. Kanva, the sage who has given his blessing to the union, returns to his forest home and grants his consent for their marriage to stand.

The curse takes hold as Shakuntala becomes pregnant, and Kanva urges her to travel to her husband’s palace to learn the duties of wife and daughter-in-law. On the journey, a river crossing by canoe becomes a moment of longing and reflection; in the water, Shakuntala’s fingers brush the surface, and her ring—the ring Dushyanta gave her—slips away unnoticed. When she finally reaches the capital, the king fails to recognize her and responds with disbelief, even as his counselors urge him to accept her as his queen. Despairing, Shakuntala searches for the ring, only to discover that it has vanished. She is distraught, and as she moves away, a celestial dancer carries her aside, leaving the ring’s fate unresolved in the king’s court.

The ring’s destiny shifts when it is recovered by a fisherman who finds it inside a fish. This twist proves a turning point: the moment Dushyanta beholds the ring again, Durvasa’s curse loosens its grip, and the king’s memory of his wife is restored with sudden clarity. He immediately sets out to find Shakuntala, racing through the forest until he reaches her father’s hermitage, only to learn that she has already departed. He presses on, deeper into the woods, until he encounters a remarkable scene: a young boy pries open the mouth of a lion and counts its teeth with fearless curiosity. The boy introduces himself as Bharata, the son of King Dushyanta, and leads his astonished father to Shakuntala. There, the family is finally reunited, and the bond that began in the hermitage proves strong enough to endure time, separation, and the trials of memory.
